Sheriff's Office Starts GED Services for Youth

In an effort to help incarcerated youth for their futures, the Sheriff's Office is now offering educational opportunities at the Jail and Detention Center. The initiative, a six-month pilot project that started last month, is a partnership with Durham Literacy Center and the Literacy Council of Wake County. Sheriff Mike Andrews said in a news release that the Sheriff's Office is "in a unique position to reach youth." "I am grateful that we have an opportunity to provide resources to youth, which will allow them to broaden their possibilities and steer them toward productive and rewarding achievements," Andrews said. The program is available to 16-to-24-year-old males who are currently not attending school. It includes GED prep, job skills training and mentoring opportunities, according to a news release.
